Philip Charles Paul Tattersall was born in St, Giles, London in January 1886. The son of Edward and Bertha Tattersall. His parents both died while Philip was still a child, he lived with his elder brother and sister while attending school.

In civilian life Philip was a Bank Clerk and at the time of the 1911 census he was living with his brothers and sister at 62 Acre Lane, Brixton. A pre war territorial, Tattersalls was gazetted Second Lieutenant on the 25^th of August 1910. He joined the 11^th London Regiment, The Finsbury Rifles. Promoted to Lieutenant on the 10^th of May 1913 and Captain on the 25^th of September 1914.

Tattersall landed in Gallipoli on the 30^th July 1915, after the evacuation he was posted to Egypt and took park in the 1^st and 2^nd Battles of Gaza. It was during the second battle on the 19^th of April 1917 that he was awarded the DSO for gallantry.

 DSO citation gazetted 16^th August 1917;

‘For conspicuous gallantry and- devotion to duty. When senior officer of his battalion, he led the front line forward to within 400 yards of the enemy's position. Although badly wounded in both legs, he continued, to direct the fire until dusk. He refused to retire until all his men had been withdrawn’.

The medal index card confirms the award of the Mention in Despatches.

Sadly, Captain Tattersall accidently drowned while bathing in the Mediterranean on the 28^th of July 1917. He is buried in the Deir-El-Belah War Cemetery.
