William Bancks Pitcher was born in Camberwell, London in 1885. A brewery worker and later inspector by trade, he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery during the Great War.

As a Corporal with service number 73755, he was awarded the Belgium Croix De Guerre, gazetted on the 12^th of April 1918. He was commissioned as a Temporary Second Lieutenant on the 26^th of August 1918.

Pitcher survived the war.
