Walter Shepherd was born in Oddington, Oxford. Aged 22 and working as a Waiter, he attested at Oxford on the 12th of November 1896.

He went on to serve over 22 years, seeing serving in the Sudan, Crete in 1898, the Boer War and the Great War, he was wounded in the leg on the 1st of October 1915. This was serious enough to mark the last time he would be on active service, he spent the rest of the war serving at home until discharged in 1919.
