James Shepherd was a member of the 16^th Bn Highland Light Infantry, the 2^nd Glasgow Pals, otherwise known as the Glasgow Boys Brigade Battalion.

He landed in France on the 24^th of November 1915. On the 1^st of July 1916, the Bn were in the attack on the Leipzig Salient. As soon as the men went over the top, they were hit by heavy machine gun fire. The Bn was relieved on the 3^rd of July and James was admitted to hospital with a GSW. It is highly likely he was wounded on the 1^st of July in that attack.

Shepherd was awarded the Military Medal, announced in the London Gazette on the 11^th of November 1916.
