Douglas Mackay Shepherd was born on the 8th of March 1891. Educated at Dundee High School and St Andrews University reading Mechanical Engineering

A member of the 4th Bn Black Wach TF, during the Great War, he served in France, attached to the 1st Bn until he was wounded in June 1915. Invalided back to the UK, he transferred to the Army Service Corps, Motor Transport. He returned to France and was twice mentioned in Despatches, 25th May 1918 and 30th December 1918. Shepherd served in Iraq in 1920, earning the GSM.

In the post war years, he married and moved to Kenya. During the Second World War he served as (NB/155) Sergeant in the East African Intelligence Corps. The St Andrews roll of honor notes he was killed in action on the 2nd June 1943. He was laid to rest in Mombasa Cemetery.
