John Shepherd was born in Batley, Yorkshire and was a plumber by trade.

He enlisted aged 22 years and 10 months at Lees on the 2^nd of March 1896.  

He was tried and imprisoned a number of times and suffered a broken nose while off duty.

John Served in South Africa from 15^th May 1897 until 31st October 1901. He earned the Queens South Africa Medal with six bars, all of which are confirmed.

A two year period on India followed, he was discharged on the 1^st of March 1908.
